Calif. man suspected of stabbing ex, their 2 kids

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- A man suspected in the fatal stabbings of a woman and their two young children was in critical condition at a hospital after being shot police, authorities said.

Selvin Chajon Rodriguez, a 23-year-old believed to the children's father and the woman's ex-boyfriend, was found on a freeway bridge covered in blood and holding a knife by police in Corona who had discovered his car after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon from police in neighboring Riverside on Thursday.

The officers chased him and said he attempted to car-jack a vehicle before he was shot as he stood on railroad tracks, Corona police Chief Michael Abel told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. One officer fired on him and hit him with a single shot, Abel said.

Rodriguez was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, authorities said.

The 25-year-old woman, her 4-year-old son and her 19-month-old daughter were stabbed multiple times at a home in Riverside that police Chief Sergio Diaz called “a very horrific scene.”

All three were later declared dead at a hospital. Their names were being withheld while coroner's investigators notified relatives.

Riverside police chief Sergio Diaz said the woman and Rodriguez had previously been in a long-term domestic relationship, but Rodriguez had never lived in the home where the stabbing occurred.

The victims lived at the rented home with two other adults and a child, who were not harmed.
