WESTMINSTER, Calif. (AP) -- The city of Westminster, home to Orange County's Little Saigon neighborhood, has elected its first Vietnamese-American mayor.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/WCwMbu ) 39-year-old Tri Ta won more than 42 percent of the vote in a five-candidate race.
The six-year councilman says he's grateful for the opportunity to lead the largest Vietnamese district outside the South Asian country.
In the past, Vietnamese-Americans Chuyen Nguyen and Andy Quach mounted mayoral campaigns, but both failed.
Ta will take the oath of office Dec. 12, succeeding current mayor Margie Rice.
