Cameraman robbed in Oakland during live broadcast

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Oakland police say a news cameraman was punched and robbed during a live broadcast outside a high school in the latest robbery targeting the Bay Area media.

Authorities say the attack occurred just after noon Wednesday when KPIX reporter Anne Makovec and cameraman Gregg Welk were finishing a live report outside Oakland Technical High School.

Police say five men rushed toward them and grabbed the expensive video camera from the tripod. One punched Welk in the mouth before the group fled in a Mercedes-Benz.

KPIX officials say Welk is fine and went back to work Thursday.

The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/VWwxCh) reports in recent months journalists from KTVU, KNTV and the Oakland Tribune have been robbed of their cameras in Oakland, often in broad daylight.
