San Bernardino sheriff retires after 34 years

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) -- San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops has announced he will retire at the end of this year, capping 34 years with the department.

The Riverside Press Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/RPg2JT ) after being appointed four years ago, the 55-year-old says he's had a good run and he's stepping away at the top of his game.

Hoops is recommending Assistant Sheriff John McMahon to succeed him. Hoops has accepted a position as an executive fellow at Washington, DC-based Police Foundation.

He started with the department as a 21-year-old patrol officer in 1978.

The sheriff receives an annual salary of $225,574 and $217,115 in benefits.
