The city of Murrieta will be swarming with cycling enthusiasts next May as the city was recently selected as the second "Stage Start" for America's premier cycling event, the Amgen Tour of California. The prestigious bike tour is one of America's most successful cycling races and has become one of the nation's largest and most recognized annual sports events.
Announced Tuesday in a national press conference in Escondido, the race will begin in Escondido on May 12, 2013 and head north, an unusual route for the bike race, which has traditionally started in Northern California and worked its way south. The race will begin in Murrieta on day two of the race, May 13.
"We are extremely pleased that Amgen and AEG have chosen beautiful Murrieta for the second start of their world-class race," said Murrieta Councilmember Randon Lane. "We have long promoted a healthy lifestyle with our many parks and our newly created fitness routes. The race will create an opportunity for increased world-wide recognition for this region."
Murrieta has long been considered a hidden gem. With very low crime rates, a great quality of life and a focus on job creation, the City's economic development goals are to attract technology companies so that residents who commute to high-end jobs in San Diego can stay in town for work.
"It is our goal that this race will bring a lot of new people to this region and to our city," said Bruce Coleman, economic development director for the city of Murrieta. "Not only to patronize our hotels and restaurants while they are here, but to see this place as the new technology hub for Southern California."
