Off-duty LAPD officer charged in man's beating

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Prosecutors say they've charged an off-duty Los Angeles police officer with breaking a man's jaw at a 2011 party in Whittier.

Spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons says 35-year-old Donald Peko appeared in court Thursday, but his arraignment was postponed until Jan. 18.

Peko is accused of telling 23-year-old Christopher Price that he couldn't leave a family party in Whittier with an open container of alcohol.

When Price started to drink to finish the bottle, Peko allegedly punched him once in the jaw without warning.

Peko was arrested by Whittier Police. If convicted he faces up to four years in state prison.

He was released after posting $50,000 bail.
