County breaks ground on new facility for Registrar of Voters

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday to officially begin construction of the new Registrar of Voters facility at the county of San Diego Operations Center Campus in Kearny Mesa.

The new Registrar of Voters facility will be a 118,500-square-foot structure with space for staff offices, an election ballot processing area; a warehouse for collecting votes during election night; and production space and offices for sheriff, probation, auditor, treasurer and tax collector and general services.

The $73 million project will also have a 420-space parking garage, and public art will be installed and displayed.

The entire project is being built to meet LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The new Registrar of Voters center is expected to be finished in December 2013.
