SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- Santa Ana police shot and wounded a suspect officers believed was reaching for a weapon following a foot chase.
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says police received a call early Sunday of unknown trouble involving a man and a woman on a residential stretch of East Washington Avenue.
When officers arrived the man ran off, leading them on a chase through several yards. Bertagna says officers opened fire when the man turned to face them and reached for his waistband.
The man was hospitalized in critical but stable condition with a gunshot wound to his torso.
City News Service identified him as 27-year-old Ignacio Leon Jr.
Bertagna says investigators are looking for two people who were in the area at the time of the shooting, and may have taken the suspect's weapon.
