Police collect hundreds of guns in buyback program

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Police say hundreds of guns have been taken off the streets of Oakland and San Francisco in a gun buyback program that Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson is describing as a “huge success.”

Watson, a department spokeswoman, says Oakland officers collected 300 guns while San Francisco police collected 290 guns during Saturday's holiday gun buyback program.

Watson says the guns collected by Oakland police included handguns, a fully automatic assault pistol, shotguns, rifles, and a rifle with a bayonet attached to it.

In exchange for the guns, police handed out $200.

Watson says so many people showed up to turn in their firearms that a line of cars approaching a parking lot where the buyback was being held stretched for about two miles.
