HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) -- San Bernardino County fire officials say an 80-year-old man has died after his apartment in a Hesperia health care facility caught fire on Christmas Eve.
Spokesman Pete Lawson says neighbors unsuccessfully tried to alert the man after they heard loud, explosion-like noises and saw smoke on Monday night.
The man lived in some kind of health care facility near the Hesperia Senior Campus, an assisted living complex.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within about 10 minutes, and found the man dead inside.
The fire did approximately $100,000 damage to the building. It's unclear if the apartment had a working smoke detector.
The cause remains under investigation.
