SANTEE, Calif. (AP) -- A San Diego police officer is hospitalized with major injuries after a suspected drunk driver in a pickup truck struck his patrol car.
The San Diego County Sheriff's department said the impact of early Sunday's collision knocked both vehicles off the road in Santee.
Police Lt. Dan Plein tells City News Service the driver blew a red light and was speeding when he hit the driver's side door of the police car.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was trapped in his patrol car for nearly an hour before firefighters were able to extricate him.
Plein says the officer suffered broken bones and internal injuries, but is expected to survive.
The driver of the pickup truck, who was not seriously injured, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
