Public memorial to be held for PBS's Huell Howser

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A city councilman has announced a public memorial for the late Huell Howser for fans to honor the PBS host.

Tom LaBonge told KCBS-TV Wednesday that (http://cbsloc.al/ViBGIs) the gathering will be held at the Griffith Observatory on Tuesday Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Howser hosted PBS's “California's Gold” for 19 years along with other shows before he died of natural causes at his Palm Springs home Sunday night.

LaBonge, who was sworn into office by longtime friend Howser, says it's appropriate to say goodbye to the beloved television personality at the Griffith Park landmark, since he had so much enthusiasm for California's historical places.

Howser retired abruptly from broadcasting last year.
