Not guilty plea for man charged in mall gunfire

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- A man charged with firing dozens of shots outside a Newport Beach mall has pleaded not guilty to 66 charges.

Marcos Sarinana Gurrola faces charges including discharging a gun in public and two counts of assault because a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were knocked down and injured as they fled the gunfire Dec. 15. Gurrola entered his pleas Friday.

The 42-year-old ex-security guard was charged with additional counts after prosecutors linked him to a similar shooting in 2011 at the same mall.

No one was hit in either shooting at Fashion Island.

A police detective says Gurrola told him he discharged the gun because “it made him feel better.”

Police are investigating several similar incidents involving Gurrola.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/W0DRxG ) Gurrola's next court date is scheduled for March 15.
