Screenwriter collapses in Cal State class, dies

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) -- A screenwriter who wrote the 1997 John Cusack film “Grosse Pointe Blank” collapsed while giving a guest lecture at California State University, San Bernardino and later died.

County coroner's spokeswoman Sandy Fatland tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/SJuBAp) on Thursday that 49-year-old Thomas Anthony Jankiewicz died at San Bernardino Community Hospital.

Jankiewicz was invited to speak to a Cal State class called Psychology and the Movies on Wednesday night.

After a screening of “Grosse Pointe Blank,” his story about a hit man, Cusack, who returns to his hometown for a killing and a high school reunion, Jankiewicz began talking to the class about the creative process and the movie business, but grew ill and collapsed.

He received CPR, but was declared dead an hour later. The cause was not immediately clear.
