Berkeley police arrest man in stabbings, fire

BERKELY, Calif. (AP) -- Police have arrested a man they say stabbed two people in a Berkeley home and then set the house on fire.

Berkeley police Lt. Randy Files says when officers were called to the home around 4 p.m. Tuesday they found a man and a woman suffering from stab wounds.

The suspect _ who has not been named _ barricaded himself inside the home, then set the house on fire. Files says the suspect was arrested when he tried to run out the back of the home.

The two people who were stabbed were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Their names or ages have not been released. The relationship between the two victims and the suspect has not been determined.

As for the house, Files says the fire caused what he termed “substantial damage” to the home, and that the home was no longer inhabitable.
