Bell city clerk says name was forged on documents

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The city clerk in the Los Angeles suburb of Bell says her signature was forged on contracts, council meeting minutes and even resolutions.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/12beBLF ) says Rebecca Valdez testified for a third day Wednesday in the corruption trial of six former council members. They're accused of illegally inflating their salaries by serving on boards that rarely met.

Valdez examined documents she supposedly had signed and said it appeared former city clerk Theresa Diaz forged her name.

Diaz left the job in 2004 but Valdez has said she effectively continued to perform the clerk's duties for another three years.

Her testimony may help the defense argue that city record-keeping was so poor it will be hard to prove the accused councilmembers did anything wrong.
