LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Medical Board of California has launched an investigation into a string of 16 deaths tied to powerful narcotics prescribed by an Orange County doctor.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/Z1ceXx) reported Thursday the state agency recently began getting signed releases from the patients' relatives that will allow investigators to review medical records.
The newspaper in November detailed the 16 deaths tied to Dr. Van Vu, a pain management specialist.
Vu's attorney, Richard Wynn, said the doctor would cooperate fully with the investigation.
Vu previously told the newspaper that some of his patients have chronic pain that can be complicated by substance abuse and depression. He said he was unaware of many of his patients' deaths.
