1 of 2 slain Calif. officers had son on force

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) -- One of the California police detectives shot to death while investigating a sex crime had inspired his son to join the force. The other viewed her job as a mix of fighting crime and public relations.

Santa Cruz police Sgt. Loran Butch Baker and detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed Tuesday during an altercation at the home of Jeremy Goulet.

Baker was a 28-year veteran of the force. That Santa Cruz Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/15Qc75M ) that his son, Adam, served as a community service officer, and they had mailboxes side-by-side at the police department.

Butler was a 10-year veteran of the force and told the Sentinel in 2005 (http://bit.ly/YZ1w2Z ) her job also included fielding questions about how to get to the beach and where to get the best burger.
