In today’s competitive environment organizations need a strategy for growth and performance success. Within many organizations, once a process has been defined and documented, it is seldom visited within reasonable time to ensure it incorporates the latest thinking, efficiencies, technologies, and innovation. For organizations which are certified to ISO, SOX, or other federal or state regulatory requirements this could be an organization’s serious concern, if their processes are not being followed as documented. While process management is the key to innovation, process owners are individuals with deep expertise in the design, implementation, and management of world-class and best-practice business processes. They are the people who lead the teams that create and install new or rediscovered processes, and who ensure that the benefits are harvested.

Another critical element for Organizational Rediscovery is innovation. Innovation is a necessary part of being a successful, sustainable organization. But how do you make it a regular, predictable part of your business? Everyday innovation doesn’t have to be out of your reach. By applying simple, proven approaches, your company can create a culture that embraces innovation. To do this, you must look forward instead of back. The entire organization must understand that innovation is the responsibility of all within the organization. Another critical element is to incorporate the Lean methodology throughout the organization. Although traditionally used in manufacturing, for overall organizational improvement, lean should be incorporated in all areas of the organization such as, but not limited to, Administrative, Accounting, Procurement, Supplier Chain, Human Resources, resulting in improved results in other areas of the organization.

A Lean organization can be defined as performing in all organizational areas without waste. A simple example all can relate to is why is there a paper recycle or trash can next to a copier? Why can’t we get it right the first time? Lean offers many powerful methods that can be implemented within the organization as is, or integrated with other methods of improvement. Simply stated, Lean is identify and remove non-value activities, as well as other types of waste, from the daily and repetitive work processes resulting in a more productive organization.

Do people within your organization ever stop and realize that the organization could be wasting an average of 15 to 20 percent of available resources each year due to poorly defined processes, a lack of innovation, and not incorporating Lean methodologies in all they do each and every day?

In today’s competitive business environment one thing is for sure, “Change is Constant.” While most people may not be in a position to completely affect organizational change, it is important for individuals at all levels of the organization to understand how it works. Leadership must provide the organization with an understanding of the dynamics of organizational change, the benefits and reasons for change, and how they may be able to affect change in a positive and productive manner.

Organizational leaders must never allow the organization to become complacent. There are many examples of organizations that were industry leaders not long ago and are no longer in existence. Therefore, industry leaders of today will not necessarily be the leaders of tomorrow, unless they continually access their operations and make the necessary changes to retain this leadership position. We read and hear about this every day. Therefore, continuous learning, process efficiency, Incorporating Lean methodologies, and innovative thinking are extremely critical for today’s organizations to keep abreast of the latest trends and practices to successfully sustain Global competitiveness.

Those in leadership positions are responsible for creating a vision for success and guiding the organization’s capabilities to create and implement that vision, and leading the necessary action to achieve the desired outcome. This continuous change needs to take place in all areas of the organizations, by all levels of the employees, in order to bring the organization to the leading edge of performance excellence.

In conclusion, in today’s competitive environment, an organization needs a strategy for growth and performance success. Its strategy needs to increase value for the customer while operating at maximum effectiveness and minimal cost. To be successful in meeting this strategy, a business needs to continuously change in order to stay competitive in this rapidly changing market. This change needs to take place in all areas of the organization and by all levels, in order to bring the business to the leading edge of performance excellence. Therefore, success depends greatly on the ability to make things happen.
