Veteran's family questions Lodi police shooting

LODI, Calif. (AP) -- Sikh community members in the Central California city of Lodi are questioning why police shot and killed an Army veteran whose family and friends say suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Deshmesh Darbar Sikn Temple in Lodi on Friday night to mourn and demand answers in the Jan. 25 death of 43-year-old Parminder Singh Shergill near the home he shared with his mother.

Lodi police say two officers shot Shergill multiple times after he lunged at them at a knife. Friends and relatives say the Gulf War veteran's worried mother called police to look for him after he abruptly left the house while in a bad mental state.

The family has hired a civil rights lawyer who told reporters during Friday's candle light vigil that witnesses have disputed the police account.
