County worker suspected of stealing $150,000

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- An Orange County Social Services Agency employee has been arrested on suspicion of stealing $150,000 from the county by falsely claiming to be a caretaker for her parents.

The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1ko19dH ) 52-year-old Fereshteh Shafiee of Mission Viejo was taken into custody Wednesday. She faces felony embezzlement and fraud charges.

Authorities allege she falsely claimed to be taking care of her parents around the clock, despite her full-time job at the social services agency.

Investigators have issued an arrest warrant for her mother, Iran Shafiee, who is suspected of being involved in the alleged medical insurance fraud.

Another social services agency employee, 55-year-old Nahid Vakilian, is facing the same charges. Authorities say Vakilian, who worked at the In-Home Support Services program, is out of the country, possibly in Iran.
