Back to school with SDCAA

Continuing education is an important part of any successful career, whether it’s through on-the-job training, a company’s in-house programs or formal classes. This is true for property management professionals, too.

Residential property management is a fast-paced world, and one that requires extensive knowledge, skills and training in a variety of areas. Because the rental housing industry is always evolving, mastering those skills and gathering that knowledge is not a finite proposition.

In the residential rental industry — both single-family and apartment housing — keeping up with legislation, technology, accounting regulations, green practices and fair housing is imperative. Continuing education on these subjects and others is a must for today’s property managers.

Education, too, should be about self-improvement for property managers — such as attaining specialty designations or certifications, for instance. Achieving professional designations in property management shows a commitment to the rental housing industry and to developing one’s career.

The benefits of continuing education in residential property management are numerous — not only for the manager, but also the property owner, the residents and the property itself. Further training and certifications can help a manager fulfill his or her key responsibilities: maintaining a safe environment for residents and protecting an owner’s investment. This is particularly relevant when it comes to changes in related laws.

While the San Diego County Apartment Association (SDCAA) provides important rental housing industry resources, legislative advocacy and networking opportunities, the organization also has a significant role in education and training.

SDCAA shares the latest residential rental industry information through classes, seminars and educational events, providing abundant opportunities for advancing your skills and career. Our education division includes opportunities to earn professional designations and certifications.

Property management companies, owners and investors increasingly are seeking National Apartment Association-designated Certified Apartment Managers. The CAM designation is highly respected in the industry.

In March, SDCAA will begin a series for new Certified Apartment Manager (CAM) and Certified Apartment Suppliers (CAS) designations. Further information and registration is under the education section of our website.

In CAM training, participants are educated in legal responsibilities, human resource management, fair housing, marketing, property maintenance, risk management, financial management, as well as research, analysis and evaluation. The areas of study are similar for the CAS training.

SDCAA partners with the National Apartment Association Education Institute for national professional designations. In addition to CAM and CAS, we offer training to earn a designation as a National Apartment Leasing Professional.

Professional certification opportunities are available through SDCAA in the RRP Rule, the Environmental Protection Agency’s mandate on renovation, repair and painting; IROP, the Independent Rental Owner Professional Course; and SHCM, Specialist in Housing Credit Management.

Our education support extends to identifying future rental housing leaders and training them through the SDCAA Leadership Lyceum program, modeled on the National Apartment Association’s program. All of SDCAA’s education offerings, including live webinars or go-at-your-own-pace online classes, are at sdcaa.com/education.

SDCAA also hosts the largest industry education event in Southern California. This year marks the 40th annual Education Conference & Expo. The daylong conference is open to members and non-members, and draws thousands of property owners, residential property managers, investors and industry suppliers.

Mark your calendar for April 22 at the San Diego Convention Center. Eight free educational seminars are planned on topics including economic forecast, green practices, maintenance customer service and leasing advice, tenant screening and elevating your brand.

There will be networking opportunities with industry professionals, a chance to visit the nearly 200 exhibitor booths and the Maintenance Mania competition.
