School burglars steal $35K worth of computers

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Burglars made off with $35,000 worth of computer equipment from an Oakland elementary school.

The Oakland Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1lb2rJs) more than two dozen Apple iMacs and their monitors were taken early Thursday from Joaquin Miller Elementary.

School district spokesman Troy Flint says the thieves removed a grating on a lab window about 2 a.m. and then were able to dismantle locks that secured the computers to desks.

He says some students lost class work stored on the computers while others had a backup flash drive.

The computers were paid for by money raised by the school's Parent Teacher Organization.

School officials are working to find funds to replace the computers as soon as possible.
