California woman to receive medal for late father

REEDLEY, Calif. (AP) -- A Fresno County woman will travel to the White House this month to accept a posthumous Medal of Honor for her father, an Army private who fought with bravery in World War II.

The Fresno Bee says (http://bit.ly/1h6wHCH) the late Pedro Cano will be among 24 veterans to be awarded the Army's highest combat honor_ an upgrade from the Distinguished Service Cross.

His family long felt that Cano's service had not been fully valued because of his Mexican heritage.

Congress recently ordered military records of Jewish and Hispanic veterans of foreign wars to be reviewed to determine whether their valor was underestimated because of prejudice.

It was determined that Cano deserved the medal for killing 30 German soldiers in two days in 1944.

His daughter, 70-year-old Dominga Perez, and her family will attend ceremonies in Washington on March 18-19.
