The Torrey Pines Golf Course will host the U.S. Open Championship in April 2021, under a deal unanimously approved by the San Diego City Council on Monday.
The deal between the city and the U.S. Golf Association will result in at least $2.5 million in funds from the tournament going into the city's coffers, a $2 million increase from the last time the tournament came to town in 2008.
In 2008, the eight-day tournament reportedly brought more than 295,000 visitors to San Diego.
"They don't just come here for the golf," said Councilmember Scott Sherman. "They go to see our beaches, the zoo, SeaWorld and the Gaslamp."
Sherman said the main question he had for the tournament organizers was "How can I be a volunteer?" Volunteers get a chance to view the golfers in action.
