Fresno County OKs $73K in fines for pot growers

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Two Fresno County residents who grew marijuana at their homes have been fined a total of $73,000 under the county's new pot cultivation ban.

The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1jIi6yR ) supervisors approved the penalties at a hearing Tuesday.

The ban, which took effect in February, calls for fines of $1,000 per plant found at residences.

A Kerman area man was fined $30,000 for having 30 marijuana plants in his garage.

A woman from Manteca was hit with a $43,000 fine _ $1,000 for each of the 43 plants found at her mother's home. The newspaper says her mother could also face penalties through a property lien.

Fresno lawyer Brenda Linder calls the fines “exorbitant.” She says she will seek a temporary restraining order to stop the county from continuing to go after small-time growers.
