REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says one person was killed and one was injured when a sailboat taking part in a race collided with a channel marker buoy in San Francisco Bay.
KTVU-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1gKrYci ) the crash involving the 42-foot Catalina sailboat was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday just off Redwood City.
Coast Guard Lt. Mark Leahey says other boats in the area had trouble reaching the damaged boat due to the shallow water.
When rescue crews arrived they found one person in distress and receiving CPR. Leahey says one person later died and one was treated for unspecified injuries.
There were five people on the sailboat, which was involved in a race hosted by the Sequoia Yacht Club in Redwood City.
