Thousands of pot plants seized in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) -- More than 11,000 marijuana plants have been seized by Kern County sheriff's deputies in a raid on two clandestine growing sites in the Mill Creek Mountain area northeast of Bakersfield.

The Sheriff's Office says the department's major violator unit and a SWAT team served a search warrant Wednesday on the rural area near Highway 178.

Three people working in the area fled, but one was captured and booked for investigation of growing and possessing marijuana for sale.

Nearly 5,700 plants were removed from one garden and nearly 5,500 were seized at the other garden. A helicopter hoisted the contraband plants out of the area so they could be destroyed.
