Assisted care home owner withdraws defense

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) -- The owner of a former Northern California assisted-care center where 19 elderly people were abandoned last year has withdrawn her attempts to keep her license to operate in California.

The Oakland Tribune reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1yJdOQG ) that Mary Julleah Manuel filed court documents last week confirming that she was forfeiting any defense of accusations brought against her by the Department of Social Service.

The many accusations include violating department protocol to properly clear employees who worked at Valley Springs Manor in Castro Valley.

Manuel will accept all accusations to be found true and the department can revoke her certificate to operate a residential care facility licensed by the state.

State officials ordered an emergency closure of Valley Springs Manor in October, where 19 residents were left to be cared for by two unpaid workers.
