Unearthed structure could be old LA Times building

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Excavation has unearthed the downtown remains of structure that could be the old Los Angeles Times building blown up by militant unionists more than a century ago.

The Times reports (http://lat.ms/1m1NnQu ) the site at the northeast corner of North Broadway and West 1st Street might contain the basement or foundation of the building gutted by a dynamite blast in 1910.

Photos posted online by history buffs show an odd diagonal slant to the discovered structure that also existed in the former Times building.

At least 20 people were killed in the blast and fire on Oct. 1, 1910.

The bomb was planted by labor organizers unhappy with the paper's then-anti-union practices.

The site is being developed as an extension of Grand Park.
