Prosecutor: murder suspect attempted jail escape

HERCULES, Calif. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a man accused in the slaying of a retired San Francisco Bay area schoolteacher attempted an escape from jail by trying to carve his way out of a cell window.

During a preliminary hearing Monday, prosecutor Molly Manoukian said Darnell Washington had fashioned a rope out of bed sheets and hoarded shanks at a Contra Costa County jail.

The Contra Costa Times (http://bit.ly/WujO0Z) says the 2012 murder for which Washington was arrested occurred after he broke out of a San Bernardino jail. And a year before that successful escape, he tried to escape from the same facility.

Washington's attorney had asked the judge to allow his client to sit in court unshackled. The judge said no.

Washington and his wife Tania have pleaded not guilty to the killing of 55-year-old Susie Ko in the city of Hercules.
