Cypher Genomics appoints new president, board chair, directors

San Diego genome informatics company Cypher Genomics Inc., announced on Thursday several leadership appointments, including Adam Simpson as president and chief operating officer.

Cypher additionally announced the appointment of Henry Nordhoff as executive chairman of Cypher's board of directors, and appointed Herbert Boyer -- who co-founded and led Genentech as vice president, and Andrew von Eschenbach -- the former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as directors.

Simpson previously served as an executive adviser to life science investors and companies, including Cypher Genomics. Before that, he was co-founder and chief business officer of Meritage Pharma from company creation through the option agreement with ViroPharma for its sale. He also served as the general counsel at Verus Pharmaceuticals, where he led its sale to AstraZeneca and Shionogi, and previously was an attorney at Latham and Watkins.

Nordhoff served as president and CEO of Gen-Probe for 15 years until his retirement in May 2009, while Boyer co-founded Genentech with Robert Swanson in 1976. Von Eschenbach currently serves as both president of Samaritan Health Initiatives and is an adjunct professor at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
