DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) -- The Coast Guard is searching the waters off Dana Point for the body of a man who disappeared after going under a large wave.
Authorities say the 60-year-old man's family contacted a lifeguard when he didn't surface at Salt Creek Beach around 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
A large search and rescue effort involving lifeguards, snorkelers and helicopter crews was launched, but as hours passed the effort turned into a recovery mission.
Coast Guard spokesman Adam Eggers said two boats will search through the night for the man's body. He said crews were looking around the shore and out to sea in case a rip tide had pulled him away from shore.
The National Weather Service had issued a high surf advisory Saturday warning swimmers of dangerous ocean conditions.
