Mayor Kevin Faulconer plans to unveil a revitalized Plaza de Panama at 1 p.m. Wednesday as part of the Panama-California Exposition centennial celebration at Balboa Park that will continue throughout this year.
Improvements include new amenities such as tables, chairs, umbrellas, benches, games, an “outdoor living room” and a lawn for lounging. In addition, specially crafted presentation panels allow the adjacent museums to have their collections and exhibits on display outside their buildings.
Funded by Southwest Airlines and The San Diego Foundation, the new vision for the plaza was developed with input from the community and park stakeholders "to create an active, vibrant gathering place for millions of Balboa Park visitors each year."
Along with Faulconer, the scheduled attendees include Bob Montgomery, Southwest Airlines vice president of airport affairs; Carol Chang, Balboa Park Conservancy board president; Emily Young, San Diego Foundation vice president of community impact; and Fred Kent, Project for Public Spaces co-founder and president.
