Find the best work force for all ironwork crafts – Ironworkers Local 229

Looking for ironworkers with world-class training and experience? Hire Local 229's second-to-none work force.

More than 1,400 of San Diego's most physically-fit, hard-working ironworkers belong to Local 229.

Building San Diego and training the best

We have built some of San Diego's most impressive, complex structures including the Coronado Bay Bridge, San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, San Diego Central Library, San Diego International Airport, Petco Park and the new downtown federal courthouse, to name a few. We work in any place that calls for highly-trained, highly-skilled union ironworkers.

Our men and women gain skills through a rigorous, four-year apprenticeship program that sets the standard for the ironworking industry. After finishing the program, ironworkers are ready for a rewarding career building structures throughout San Diego and Imperial counties.

Our signatory contractors recognize Local 229 as a leader in the construction industry. They count on us to provide a drug-free, safe, productive and skilled work force.

Ironworkers Local 229 – A legacy of quality and community service

Our history is strong. We formed in 1918 and have grown steadily ever since. We've survived booms and busts while continuing to focus on what makes us strong: our skills and training.

Our solid reputation has convinced contractors and owners that a partnership with Local 229 is the best investment they will ever make.

When contractors hire us, they invest in the community. We take pride in helping veterans train for new careers through the Helmets to Hardhats Program. Also, we draw from community-based programs to fill apprenticeship slots with the best candidates. San Diego Labor Council Youth Build and Center of Policy Initiatives have been instrumental in guiding our involvement with community programs.

If you or a community organization you work with would like more information about apprenticeship programs that help community members train for and succeed in good, middle-class careers, contact Lorena Gonzalez at the San Diego Labor Council Youth Build at 619-228-8101, or Trinh Le at the Center on Policy Initiatives at 619-584-5744 ext. 24.
