With traditional inspiration and new passion, Trio Ellas brings a unique sound that combines traditional mariachi, romantic boleros, bluegrass and rock with a fresh contemporary twist to Temecula's Stage this Friday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. Their performance kicks off the Theater's 2014-15 Groove Series, a move that theater manager Bea Barnett considers a perfect fit.
"This season we really focused on the Temecula ideal of preserving tradition while fostering innovation," Barnett said. "We stayed true to the best elements of the Theater's past successes, and then branched out into innovative territory to bring residents more of what they love: family-friendly, world-class entertainment options that are close to home. Trio Ellas, with their impeccable musicianship, pay homage to the great tradition of Mariachi while infusing it with fresh, vibrant new influences."
The young trio is composed of Suemy Gonzalez (violin and vocals), a recent graduate of USC's prestigious Thornton School of Music; Nelly Cortez (guitarron and vocals), a fourth generation mariachi musician and recreational pilot; and Stephanie Amaro (guitar and vocals), a versatile musician who performs and records in genres ranging from electronica to mariachi. The girls' high level of musical proficiency has earned them a professional track record that includes recordings for artists such as Benjamin Gibbard and Lady GaGa, and live performances with a myriad of top artists ranging from Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan to Mariachi El Bronx. The trio's debut album Con Ustedes earned them a nomination for a 2012 Latin GRAMMY®, and their recent release, Noches Angelinas, has fans new and old taking notice.
Trio Ellas' concert at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater on Friday is part of a jam-packed season opening weekend which also includes a rocking tribute by Led Zepagain on Sep 4, a Classical Series performance by ZOFO Piano Duo on Sep 6, and a Big Band Series concert featuring Musical Chairs: A Tribute to Duke Ellington with Derrik Lewis on Sep 7.
