Gary Shekhter, Helix Electric CEO, has not only managed to develop one of the top 10 electrical contracting firms in the country, he hasn't missed a beat during the current economic downturn.
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Shekhter has managed to create an American success story by opting to develop projects that, while not impervious to the country's current problems, come closer than most.
Shekhter, who came to the United States as an electrical engineer about 25 years ago, opened Helix at a small office in El Cajon in 1985. The firm has since grown to about 1,400 employees, and has offices in the Bay Area, Las Vegas and Phoenix, as well as its Miramar headquarters. The Phoenix office, started two years ago with a skeleton staff, has since grown to about 150 people, he said.
