In his 36 years of leadership experience at housing authorities in various U.S. cities, San Diego Housing Commission President and CEO Rick Gentry has seen housing markets boom and bust and boom again. And with each direction the market takes, Gentry observed, there are different stresses that can emphasize the need for affordable housing, from rising property cost to rising unemployment.
"The way I like to describe the mission of the Housing Commission is that our function is to provide housing resources and support to those citizens of San Diego for whom the market does not work," Gentry said. "I think the stresses you see for affordable housing are there, whether the economy's good or bad."
