Catherine "Kitty" Mackey heads up Pfizer Inc.'s La Jolla campus, with 1,000 employees and a million square feet of office and laboratory space.
Mackey came to Pfizer La Jolla after leading Genomic and Proteomic Sciences at the pharmaceutical giant's 6,000-employee campus in Groton, Conn., and has been at Pfizer La Jolla since 2001. More recently, the company has gone through a number of changes at its highest levels -- it hired a new chief executive officer, Jeffrey Kindler, in July and there have been shakeups at the executive level throughout the summer. Pfizer scientists also are scrambling to create a drug to replace Lipitor, the company's blockbuster cholesterol drug whose patent is set to expire soon.
At Pfizer La Jolla, the focus is on researching compounds and developing market-ready drugs. Much of that research is focused on cancer drugs, as well as opthamology, diabetes and virology.
