The brains -- and the creativity -- behind numerous architectural projects in the area, Douglas Austin is a proponent of thinking outside the box. After all, he does it himself.
Austin is a principal, chairman and the director of design for Austin Veum Robbins Partners (AVRP), the second largest architecture firm in San Diego. Austin has designed and implemented such arresting structures as the Smart Corner project downtown, which comes complete with not only great design but also its own trolley stop. Perhaps this and other projects are visionary because Austin views his firm's projects as blending science and art. He believes a physical space should transcend just the functional.
AVRP's been the recipient of numerous awards, including two prestigious Gold Nugget Grand Awards, four Gold Nugget Merit Awards and recognition as finalists for San Diego's 2001 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in the real estate/construction category.
