As The Daily Transcript celebrates its 120th year in print, our editorial board -- with help from the San Diego Historical Society -- reflects back on our region’s rich history. In this feature, we pay tribute to some of the pioneers who played an integral part in laying the foundation for San Diego’s future growth. For the past year, Dr. Gene W. Ray has been managing director of GMT Ventures LLC, where he provides assistance and guidance to early stage companies.
Ray was one of the founders of The Titan Corp., where he served as CEO and a director of the corporation since the company's inception in 1981. The company merged with the L-3 Communications family last year.
Prior to launching Titan, Ray was executive vice president, general manager and a director of Science Applications International Corp. Inc. for 11 years. Ray served for two years as Chief, Strategic Division, U.S. Air Force. He held the position of Senior Appointee (Public Law 313) on the staff of the chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, where he led a team of military and civilian analysts and scientists. Earlier in his career, Ray was with the Aerospace Corporation where he contributed to weapon system analysis programs and specialized in the area of nuclear survivability.
