Chairman John Moores is famous for being the owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team, but this real estate director should also be known for his philanthropy and his commitment to education. He is chairman of the University of California Board of Regents and has extended his generosity to several major universities across America.
His 1991contribution of $51 million to the University of Houston was the largest in U.S. history to a public university. He served on the Board of Regents of the University of Houston, and Moores also gave $21 million to the University of California, San Diego. In 1999, he was appointed regent of the University of California by then-Gov. Gray Davis.
Organizations that Moores has supported include the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Center for Children and St. Vincent de Paul Villages. Moores is also the founder of the River Blindness Foundation.
