Life Technologies is like a microcosm of the entire San Diego life science sector, all under one roof.

While the Carslbad company does not conduct drug research, it does just about everything else, designing, manufacturing and selling products that help with drug research. Created in 2008 out of a merger between Invitrogen and Applied Biosciences, the company has already become one of the biggest of its kind in San Diego, and while it may not be a big fish like a Merck (NYSE: MRK) or an Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), it's a rare, medium-sized fish in a local sector awash in small, entrepreneurial companies.

Bernd Brust, the president and chief commercial operations officer, said that the company has advanced quickly by buying smaller companies rather than trying to develop every product on its own, and by keeping a close eye on what customers want.
