This year, a piece of old San Diego was revived and brought into the present.
In January, the Gaslamp District's Balboa Theater, which was built in 1924, reopened after having been closed for more than 20 years. Since 2002, the Balboa Theater has been in the process of undergoing a thorough renovation, which included having its historic features restored, meeting current requirements for seismic retro-fit, electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC, in addition to state-of-the-art lighting, audio and production equipment.
According to Don Telford, president and chief operating officer of San Diego Theaters (which operates the Balboa and the Civic Theater), the opening has been a very well received and positive experience, though not one without some obstacles.
