A hippie upbringing, a fine arts degree and a passion for pottery could lead to an eclectic number of creative futures. But for Major Linda Markiewicz, that foundation led to something entirely unforeseen.

The divisional commander of Southern California's Sierra del Mar region (encompassing San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties) moved to New York after college to pursue an arts career, wound up working for the Salvation Army and began to really appreciate -- and truly understand -- what it is.
