About: J. Robert Beyster

Dr. J. Robert Beyster saw something early in the power of ownership, so when he founded Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) with a handful of other scientists in 1969, instead of keeping company stock to himself, he chose to reward the performance of employees with their own stock ownership.

As a result of this philosophy, SAIC became one of the largest and fastest-growing employee-owned companies in the world and, in 1986, Beyster established the Foundation for Enterprise Development, which helps governments and private organizations use entrepreneurial employee ownership as an effective social and economic strategy.

As part of the foundation, the non-profit Beyster Institute for Entrepreneurial Employee Ownership was launched in 2002 and in 2004, SAIC donated $4 million in honor of Beyster's retirement as SAIC's chairman of the board marking Beyer's legacy of dedication to employee ownership and commitment to rewarding employees fairly for their efforts.
