Admittedly, San Diego is a beautiful place to live. But that isn't why Dr. Mark A. Talamini left a distinguished career at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for new appointments as professor and chairman of the department of surgery at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine three years ago.
Talamini's leadership is key to UCSD Medical Center's long-term goal to create a world-class medical center. Talamini considers UCSD one of the top powerhouses of academic research in the country, but concedes it has yet to leverage that into a great clinical enterprise. Simply put, he believes an opportunity exists at UCSD to create a Hopkins-like clinical presence.
