PUBLIC SCOPING MEETING
Proposed National City Aquatic Center
A public scoping meeting regarding the proposed aquatic center will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 from 6:00 Ð 7:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, 140 East Twelfth (12th) Street, National City, CA 91950 - east on Twelfth from the intersection with National City Boulevard.
A 4700 square foot aquatic center for educational and recreational programs is being proposed in the current location of the Pepper Park restrooms adjacent to the National City launch ramp and landing dock facilities. The existing restrooms are to be reconstructed in an area adjacent to the launch ramp, parking lot and park area.
The aquatic center project site is located west of the I-5 freeway, south of the intersection of Tidelands Avenue and 32nd Street in Pepper Park along the Sweetwater Channel on tidelands of the Unified Port of San Diego.
The proposed project consists of the following components:
¥ Demolition and removal of the existing restroom building and construction of a new ADA compliant restroom facility in the immediate area.
¥ Demolition of the drinking fountain, public pay phone, 8 to 12 trees, plant materials, concrete walkways and construction of a 4700 square foot aquatic center facility in cluding restrooms, locker rooms, offices, classrooms, watercraft storage, paved exte rior activity areas, security walls, fencing, lighting, tree and plant material replacement. The project may include striping for parallel parking along Tidelands Avenue, and po tentially pavement and striping for parking along Goesno Place and/or 32nd Street if required.
¥ Demolition and removal of program temporary building facilities, slurry sealing and parking spaces striped for vehicle use.
The National City Redevelopment Commission is the sponsor of the aquatic center project. The South Bay Family YMCA will be the operator of the aquatic center. The YMCA currently operates recreational programs from a temporary facility located in the launching ramp parking lot.
Programs for kayaking, rowing, canoeing and potentially sailing instruction are proposed for the permanent facility.
The public is invited to attend the meeting to learn about the proposed aquatic center and discuss any potential concerns regarding the proposed project.
