Golden Door reportedly sold for $24.8 million

The San Diego office of HFF says it has brokered the sale of the 41-room Golden Door Spa along with its 377 acres in San Marcos for a reported $24.8 million.

The buyer for the property has not been disclosed and the County Recorder documents were not yet available by press time. The seller is a unit of The Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX)

The sale also reportedly included Golden Door branded spas in Waldorf Astoria properties in Park City, Utah and Naples, Fla., but no further details have been offered.

The transaction also includes ownership of The Golden Door brand and future resort expansion opportunities that were not specified.

Founded in 1958 by Deborah Szekaly and her late husband Edmond, the resort was rebuilt in 1975. This wasn’t the only Szekaly resort. The duo founded Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico about 15 years before starting the Golden Door. That ownership is reportedly still in family hands.

Other properties owned or developed by the Szekalys have included Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires in Lenox, Mass. and Miraval Life in Balance, in Catalina, Ariz. The status of those assets wasn't immediately clear.

The Golden Door, an award-winning, Japanese-inspired resort was ranked the No. 1 destination spa in North America, according to a poll of 6,000 readers conducted by Conde Nast Traveler magazine in the year 2000.

The exclusive property at 777 Deer Springs Road features 20 miles of hiking trails, expansive indoor fitness areas, a tennis court, swimming pool and jacuzzi, water therapy pool, Japanese bathhouse and archery range in addition to a 122-acre avocado orchard and organic vegetable and fruit gardens.

.The HFF team representing Blackstone was led by senior managing directors Dan Peek and Bill Stadler, managing director Scott Hall and real estate analyst Alexandra Lalos.

“We are extremely pleased to have participated in this unique offering of one of the most well-known destination spa resorts and wellness brands in the world," said Peek in a statement. The property provided an attractive opportunity to investors not only because of its excellent reputation as a leader in the industry but also because of the expansion and redevelopment opportunities it offers.”
