233 SD tax-defaulted properties go to auction on March 13

More than 230 tax-defaulted properties are set to be sold at the 2013 Property Tax Sale Auction on March 13, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.

The property auction will be held in an effort to collect $4,550,638 in unpaid property taxes including penalties and fees. The auction will take place at the San Diego Convention Center, room 6D, on 111 West Harbor Drive.

“We currently have 114 improved properties and 119 unimproved parcels ready for auction,” McAllister said. “The numbers may change if owners step up and pay the defaulted taxes with penalties right before the deadline. Owners of delinquent properties have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, the day before the tax sale, to bring their taxes and delinquent charges up to date, or their property will be sold.”

Interested bidders are required to be registered by 5 p.m. on March 11 to participate in the auction. Bidder packets are available for $65 at all of the treasurer-tax collector’s offices located in downtown San Diego, Kearny Mesa, Chula Vista, El Cajon or San Marcos.

Under California law, the treasurer-tax collector may sell any or all portions of properties that have been in default for five years. In November 2011, the Board of Supervisors approved 290 properties for last year’s auction. In December 2012, the board approved 295 properties for auction at this year’s sale.

The lowest minimum bid will start at $4,400, and the highest is set to start at $526,000. Minimum bids are set based on the total amount of back taxes, penalties and sales costs for unimproved properties and at approximately half of the assessed value for improved properties. The successful bidder may take possession of a property after making a payment in full and after the Tax Deed to Purchaser has been recorded.
